:: Bands

Malcolm Hamerston has played in a plethora of bands, covering a range of styles and genres, giving him a level of experience and expertise that is difficult to match. Here are some of his favourites from the past and the present.

Burlesque

I played in a few local bands in the Newbury area in the UK most notable of which was Burlesque with Den Clarke (Guitar), Jeremy Waller (Keys), Harvey Booth (Vox and blues harp) and Bob Howe on bass which (for their time) were a very ‘progressive’rock band playing tunes (mainly covers) in odd time signatures in the late 60’s.

Country Fever

In 1970 I was offered the drum chair in Country Fever..I knew their current drummer John Kitchener and he took me for a ride in his Lotus one freezing day, bought me a pint and suggested I ‘audition’.

This I did (reluctantly) as I knew nothing about country music. However the band liked my approach (as being somewhat different from the regular ‘country’ drummers)…and offered me the full time gig. They were the band of the time and had such players as Gerry Hogan, Roger Dean, Albert Lee, Adrian Legg and Pete Oakman. We toured Britain and the Europe prodigously and did many sessions for the BBC.
